放下|Letting Go

Updated: Dec 21, 2024

My relationship with corporate attire began in 2011 when I landed my first investment role. My natural inclination toward comfort quickly collided with industry expectations, leading to a swift transformation with a help of a personal stylist – and what felt like half my first pay check.

Over the years, executive coaches from various cultures consistently advised me to dress 'more senior.' In an industry where experience carries weight, looking younger was seen as a professional liability. One German-speaking coach was particularly direct: 'Looking "knackig" (crispy?) is great for your personal life, but professionally, you need extra conservative clothes. First impressions are everything.'

I bought into that narrative for over a decade. But recently, with time and introspection, my priorities changed. Last week, I finally donated my entire 'work wardrobe' – the suits, designer bags, jewellery, and power heels. What remains are pieces that feel true: organic cotton clothes and minimalist shoes that honor my feet's natural shape, allowing my toes to spread and move as nature intended during walking meetings.

Yes, people will judge on first impressions. Yes, some might never give me a second chance based on appearances. But I've outgrown the fear of missing out. Ironically, some of my most meaningful connections formed when I was dressed authentically, as I would around loved ones.

I no longer aspire to look successful or wealthy. I don't need to look like I'm somebody – I just want to feel like myself. My most treasured accessory now? A handmade bag my partner created in his first and only sewing class. This simple expression of love carries more meaning than any designer label ever could.
