随缘 | Flow

Updated: 4 days ago

My life had been planned down to 30-minute increments. Then I met my partner. Raised in a sun-soaked place by a warm, loving family, he moves through life with a heart of gold – and a complete disregard for schedules. During our early dating years, I would practically combust with irritation when we'd leave our hotel in national parks just as other hikers were returning, their day's adventures already complete.

I still remember when my father called the day before his visit. "Where should I meet you guys tomorrow at 2:30?" The question hung in the air. I had to tell him, fighting back a mixture of embarrassment and unexpected laughter, that I truly had no idea where we would be at that precise moment – or any moment, really.

The transformation didn't happen overnight. What started as teeth-grinding frustration at derailed plans slowly evolved into something surprising – a quiet delight in life's spontaneity. Now, halfway through our cross-country journey, we're still three days behind schedule, meandering toward our carefully selected (and very non-refundable) accommodation. Initially I still caught myself sighing at missed timelines. Then I found myself grinning, wondering what unexpected adventures today's detour might bring.

Without the steel cage of schedules, I began noticing moments that once rushed past unnoticed. More surprisingly, I've found myself stumbling upon pure, unscripted joy with each passing day.

My German colleague once praised my "Durchsetzungsvermögen" (persistence), seeing life as a marathon to be completed efficiently, checkpoint by checkpoint. But I'm learning that life isn't about racing from point A to point B. It's more of a dance with the unexpected, a flow that can't be forced. We're all moving with the rhythm of the universe, and everything that happens – even the missed checkpoints – can be met with peace and, increasingly often, amusement.
